Environmental Responsibility
Every thread of what we create starts with care and responsibility.
Caring for the environment isn’t just a trend for us – it’s been part of who we are since the word go. Long before sustainability became a buzzword, we were already working hard to do things the right way. Our vision is to be the greenest clothing manufacturer in Europe, and to achieve it we have a simple, yet powerful mission: "To promote the sustainable use of natural resources, with minimum waste and impact on the environment." Every decision we make is guided by this commitment, from the materials we choose to how we reduce waste. For us, sustainability isn’t a box to tick – it’s a promise to the planet and the people who share it.
Nothing goes to landfill
In 2019, we became a zero waste-to-landfill company. That means every bit of waste from our business and manufacturing process is either reused, recycled, composted, or recovered for energy. This approach not only eliminates landfill waste but also strengthens both our environmental and economic sustainability.
Solar powered energy
We’ve also taken big steps to reduce our energy footprint. Our factory roofs are fitted with solar panels that generate an impressive 651,000 kWh of electricity annually – enough to make all our operations powered by renewable energy – with surplus that’s fed back into the national grid. And that’s not all. We’ve invested in energy-efficient innovations like modular boilers, air source heat pumps, double glazing, triple-layered roofs, low-energy lighting, and auto-stop sewing machine motors – all working together to keep our energy use as lean as possible. And it’s making a genuine difference. In the last five years, we’ve cut our energy usage by an impressive 51%.
Reducing Carbon Emissions
Partnering with the University of Nottingham’s Energy Innovation & Collaboration team, we conducted a comprehensive study of our carbon footprint. The results? A garment made in our sewing rooms produces 47% fewer emissions than a similar garment produced abroad in a country like China. This insight helps us measure our progress and continually improve our resource efficiency. For us, sustainability isn’t just about what we make – it’s about how we make it. By protecting the planet, we’re investing in a better future for everyone.
“As both a designer and manufacturer, safeguarding our environment to ensure a sustainable future is of paramount importance.”Christopher Nieper OBE DL, Chief Executive
Sustainable Fashion Production
At David Nieper, we believe great fashion doesn’t have to cost the earth – literally. That’s why every garment made in our Derbyshire sewing rooms takes a shorter journey, straight from our hands to yours. This local approach not only reduces the carbon footprint but ensures a personal touch in every stitch. Our ‘just-in-time’ manufacturing model means many of our garments are only made when the order comes in. This thoughtful approach means that an impressive 99.8% of orders are fulfilled with no overproduction or waste. Anything left is donated to charity rather than being destroyed or sent to landfill.

Slow fashion
Unlike fast fashion, we design clothes to last. Our talented design team creates timeless styles that feel as good as they look – flattering, comfortable, and never out of date. Clever details like elasticated waistbands, adjustable fastenings, and fabrics with a little stretch mean our clothes adapt to you over time, extending their lifespan. In fact, a 2019 customer survey revealed that David Nieper clothes are worn an incredible five times longer than the national average.

Lower ‘fashion miles’
We’re also champions of reshoring fashion production back to the UK. Many garments in the typical supply chain take an unnecessary global tour – manufactured overseas, shipped by sea or air, stored in a logistics hub, and finally sent to retailers. Our UK-based production eliminates these extra miles, reducing environmental impact and giving us greater control over quality and sustainability. While some of our carefully curated collections are sourced from trusted partners abroad, we remain committed to making thoughtful, lasting choices. Every piece we create or select is a step towards a more sustainable future – because we believe that fashion should look good, feel good, and do good too.
Our Greener Supply Chain
At David Nieper, everything we do is built on long-standing relationships and a passion for being the best we can be. We work with 130 trusted suppliers to source the finest materials – fabric, yarn, lace, and even the perfect buttons. Many of these partnerships have been nurtured for years, ensuring quality, ethical production, and a focus on traceability. Where we can, we choose British suppliers to keep things local and reduce our carbon footprint. Over the years, we’ve brought more of our production in-house, so we can have greater control over every step of the process. From knitting our own sweaters to printing our own catalogues, we’ve steadily worked to make more and more garments ourselves.

Less water waste
In 2019, we even opened our own digital print factory, which has been a game-changer. By printing our fabrics ourselves, we use much less water, reduce waste with smaller fabric runs, and ensure our collections are always in stock for you. This in-house approach also allows us to choose materials we believe in. Take our supreme green cotton, for example. It’s grown sustainably with non-GMO seeds and processed using renewable energy – better for the planet and for the clothes you love to wear. Our merino wool is another sumptuous choice, spun for us in Italy by world-class spinners. With every choice, we’re not just designing beautiful clothes that fit and flatter – we’re creating a better way of working that feels good for both our customers and the planet.
Eco-friendly Yarns and Threads
We choose yarn suppliers who not only meet the highest standards for quality but also share our passion for protecting people, animals, and the planet. From human rights to animal welfare and environmental best practices, their values align with ours every step of the way.Our suppliers hold impressive credentials, including ITF certification for full traceability, Oeko-Tex Standard 100 for safety, and renewable energy certifications. They meet rigorous environmental and workplace safety standards like ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 and are fully compliant with REACH regulations to ensure chemical safety. We’re especially proud to work with a cotton yarn supplier who is part of the Better Cotton Initiative, helping make cotton farming kinder to the planet and the people who grow it. These aren’t just technical achievements – they’re meaningful commitments, and they’re woven into everything we make for you.
